The company was founded by the Hungarian State in 1948 and has been a nationalised company since then. Known as Tokaj Trading House after 1993, it changed its name to Grand Tokaj in 2016, emphasising the key role it always played in the wine region and also proclaiming its aim of becoming an important figure not only in the domestic market, but also on the global market

Grand Tokaj, the largest winery in the historic UNESCO World Heritage Tokaj wine region, is the protector of national winemaking traditions. This winery that owns 67 hectares of vineyards is an important player and also the largest: it is responsible for around 35 % of the region’s total wine production. The regional integrator, it buys grapes from over 1000 small-scale growers on about 1000 hectares.

Thanks to the developments the winery makes large quantities of high quality wines from its own and bought grapes in its winemaking hall with a capacity of 66 thousand hectolitres that can produce 10 million bottles annually. The wines which present the new spirit of Grand Tokaj Winery are made under the supervision of head winemaker Károly Áts, winner of Wine Producer of the Year in 2012 and known for his 100-point Eszencia. “I was born in a wine region that – I think – is a miracle,” says Károly Áts.
