Winemaking

This Tokaji Aszú Esszencia 2003 is an outstanding wine, made without racking and with lees stirring for one year. It’s very close to Eszencia, the juice from the berries when stored in a barrel or open tank. We make Aszú Esszencia only in very early-ripening years when the berries are full of natural sugar and sunshine. It was a hot, “easy” vintage with great weather during the harvest. Ripening was very good, giving enough sugar and acidity to balance the wines.

Wine tasting

“This category can no longer be sold, so we see ever fewer of such lots. Its exceptionalness is supported by the radiant, very clean and healthy grapes given by the 2003 vintage. The producer Samuel Tinon bottled it in 2008. Here it is worth sharing the analysis: 7.5 % alcohol, 9.6 g acidity and 330 g/l sugar. The winemaker gave around four litres of aszú berries to one litre of wine. Already dark amber in colour. Rich and warm nose, full with the character of tobacco, molasses and sandalwood. Very thick in the mouth, with the colourful world of warm oriental spices. Along with fig, date and tobacco, it lingers very long in the mouth.” (Gabriella Mészáros)
